RIP VIII

MY GOAL:

Read four books, any length, that you feel fit (the very broad definitions) of R.I.P. literature.

The (tentative) list for 2013:

1. Bellman and Black by Diane Setterfield
2. Mrs. Poe by Lynn Cullen
3. The Shining Girls by Lauren Beukes
4. Case Histories by Kate Atkinson
5. The Turn of the Screw by Henry James
6. The Haunted Hotel by Wilkie Collins
7. This House is Haunted by John Boyne
8. The Woman in Black by Susan Hill
9. The Cuckoo's Calling by Robert Galbraith (JK Rowling)
10. The Ocean at the End of the Lane by Neil Gaiman

What are you reading?

This is my most favortie challenge, so I decided to crawl out of my dark hole to participate! Can't wait to see what everyone else has planned for the celebration! Happy reading!

  1. Squee! Glad you're jumping in. I have Susan Hill's The Small Hand on my TBR (for ages). Seeing The Woman in Black reminded me. So far I've read The Other Typist for RIP. I'm also working on Jane Eyre and The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie is next.

  2. Andi,
OH! I've been wanting to read The Other Typist. Was it good?! I guess I should look for your review! The Sweetness of the Bottom of the Pie is one of my go to reads because it's funny and light. Bradley's Flavia is perfect! I can't wait to see what you think. I'm so excited to get started. I have two books for the challenge waiting at my new library.

  3. I read The Woman in Black a couple of years ago. It was fantastic -- all gothic and forbidding. Hope you have a perilous fall, reading-wise!

  4. Case Histories is one of my favorites... one of those books that I kind of wish I'd never read so that I could have the pleasure of doing so for the first time now :) And the PBS miniseries of it is great too, once you've finished reading!

    1. I read the first couple chapeters years back and remember really liking it. I don't think I had the time to finish then, but I'm definitely excited about reading it now and then watching the series!!

  5. Yay! You are joining R.I.P. VIII ;) That is so great! I love your list of books! I just finished reading B&B so I'm really looking forward to your thoughts on it. I'm thinking we aren't going to agree on this one. And, I got Mrs. Poe from NetGalley, too! Can't wait to read your posts!

    1. RIPVIII is my favorite challenge so even if I'm not able to update here as frequently, I'm pretty excited about joining and reviewing again. I think we generally agree on most books so I'm happy to hear that you enjoyed it in the end despite the lag in the middle! Yay! Can't wait to read your reviews.

  6. I didn't join and don't think like doing so due to the new academic year starting next week, lots of excitement and new things happening etc although I'm reading some short stories by Angela Carter :)

I hope you adore Kate Atkinson. She's amazing.

  8. Yay, I'm glad you're joining in. This is my first year taking part, I've read one book so far and am loving it.
I'm going to be reading Turn of the Screw too, but probably nearer Halloween. I didn't put Bellman & Black on my list but I do have a copy so I might sneak it in...

    1. You are going to LOVE it, Sam! Seriously. Love the RIP challenge. It's really fun joining in with all the other participants. Too bad we can't have a in person book club! How fun. Yeah, I think I'm saving the more spooky, ghost story like titles for the holiday.

  11. Great list! I really liked The Woman in Black. A fast, fun read with genuinely scary bits (for me, at least). And I love that you have Wilkie Collins on you list!

    1. That's exactly what I was looking for so glad to here I'll get it! I had to add Wilkie-- I feel like it's a tradition. I might add The Moonstone to next year's list!

  12. Such a great list! I didn't add it to my list since I don't have a copy yet, but I really want to read The Shining Girls. And I'd love to read The Woman in Black too, if I can put my hands on a copy. The books I am the most excited to read on my list are The Ocean at the End of the Lane by Neil Gaiman, A Monster Calls by Patrick Ness and House of Leaves by Mark Z. Danielewski!

    1. I just picked my copy up for the library. I was initially reading it as an egalley ARC but thought it was a book that really need to be read in physical form (does that make sense?). I've heard good things so far. And I just requested The Ocean at the End of the Lane so I'm looking forward to seeing what you think. And House of Leaves! Whoa! I've always wanted to tackle that but am just too intimidated!

  13. Yaaaay! I'm loving the number of R.I.P. posts I'm seeing appearing on my blogroll - all the more people to read along with and share recommendations for NEXT year. :)

I've started with We Need to Talk About Kevin, then I think I might read Cujo or Thinner by Stephen King next, then maybe a crime novel??? I've just moved house and the rest of my books are coming out of storage today, so I'll have more to choose from (if I can find them) - World War Z and The Woman in Black are first on my list of titles to look for.

Good luck, and happy spooky reading! TOFFEE APPLES AND PUMPKIN SOUP ALL ROUND! I feel so autumnal all of a sudden!

    1. I really should add a Stephen King to the list. Can you believe I've only read 1963?!? And that's not even spooky! I was thinking about adding The Shining and then watching the movie afterwards. We'll see what my time looks like! We actually just moved too so locating books has been a nightmare! But I'm trying out the new library in town and it's AMAZING! They have like a million copies of everything so it's been easy to find what I'm lookig for!

And yes! I found a bag of pumpkin spice m&ms and had to get them! They actually were pretty good so I might add them to cookies for the holidays! LOVE this time of year. Happy reading!
