Summer Vibes All Year Long

Sighs... By the time I return from my honeymoon, the local pools and beaches will be closed to the public. If that isn't THE sign that summer is over, I don't know what is.

And I'll admit I'm a little bummed in about a hundred ways... The winter was too long. The spring too short. The summer too rainy and cool. I could go on and on and on. I love the summer because I love the activities that accompany its presence. Picnics in the park, drinks on the patio, beach hangs by the lake... It's glorious and the opposite of winter and snow and cold and being trapped in my house. It's also the time of year that my skin glows! Really glows. I know a lot of this is probably in my head, but just a touch of sun and I'm bronze-kissed and glowing. I obviously don't condone bouts of tanning or any other type of activity asking for sun damage, but a little bit of sun on my skin after a long, dark winter is a blessing. Despite the layers of SPF, I still end up a bit bronzed and feel like a million dollars. So I made a vow that I'd find something to hold on to this magical dewey glow with beauty products through the winter to keep my spirits up. Even if I'm not sun-kissed, I'm getting scents of coconut with my scrub, dewey skin with my body oil, and well-rested eyes with my cream. It's a win and a sure way to beat the winter blues.

BODY: Goe Oil

This stuff is AMAZING. It's completely natural - plants, fruits and flowers! Plus, because it's a concentrated oil/butter, a little goes a LONG way. (I justify its price point because 1) it's natural, and 2) lasts forever!) It has the softest floral scent that warms me up just rubbing it on.

EYES: Shiseido Bio-Performance Super Corrective Eye Cream

Everyone I asked seemed to recommend this cream for the eyes when I was desperate to find something that would help with dryness around the eye and those darned dark circles. Admittedly, I hesitated for quite sometime because of the price tag, but am happy to report that it's worth every dollar! Allergies caused my eyes to appear worn out, dry, and flaky. Nightmare! I'm not kidding when I say I go out with this stuff on instead of makeup because it instantly makes me look doe-eyed and dewey. Plus, my dark circles have almost disappeared! Win.

HAIR: Poppy Austin 100% Argan Oil

Because my hair is pretty fine it appears damaged with the slightest provocation. In an attempt to stop dyeing my hair, I recently visited a salon and had an ombre look applied in order to allow the root growth to happen without looking horrific. However, this tiny bit of bleach really killed it despite the fact that I rarely blow dry or use hot tools on my hair. The stylist recommended 100% argan oil to be applied lightly on my ends after every shower to keep them hydrated and healthy. I went with Poppy Austin instead of the more well-known names because they're a small business and it's organic. Fragrance is nutty and glides on. I use it on my ends and when I need to tame fly-aways. Oh, that SHINE!

FACE: Triple Oxygen Facial In A Box by Bliss

Holy hell! I got acquainted with the triple oxygen kit a couple of years ago when I read a post on Design Sponge and none other than THE Grace Bonney was talking about how she LOVED the stuff. While I did like it, the price point was a little high for what it offered so I gradually let it slip off the radar. BUT during a restock trip to Sephora, I noticed these little packs for $12 dollars sitting near the check-out (that's where they always get me). I decided to nab one and give it a go. OH MY! I love it. The pack offers two facials making it perfect for travel, and gives you an opportunity to try the goods without investing an arm and leg. (Note: Users should avoid being out in the sun for extended periods of time after use). Great for gift-giving or for pampering yourself! Think GLOW!

LEGS: Secret of the Island Salt Scrub

Funny story: I found this at a restaurant at a beach in Florida when I was visiting with my girlfriends. We fell in love with it, I purchased a mason jar full of it, and dropped the damn thing trying to open it in the shower. It shattered. I screamed. J came to the rescue. Thinking about it a year later, I was longing for a salt scrub I knew would leave me moisturized but also take me back to those long beach days. I couldn't remember the scent I loved most, so I went with the five mini-jar deal, to sample some I knew I hadn't tried before. The stuff lasts a while so it's a great way to stock up, plus you can travel with them!! Big win. With scents like coconut, bamboo and grapefruit, and hawaiian ginger, I couldn't resist. The only sad bit is that they're not completely natural, and while I love the feeling of my legs after use and the fantastic smell, I'd love to find an alternative that is.

That's it. I'll be glowing all the way into January! Or February... Or March... (you get the point)

Spring Essentials: Lush

I love Lush. And no this post isn't sponsored by Lush. I genuinely love their goods and am always up for trying new things with the help of their super knowledgable staff.

Little known fact: I actually worked at a Lush location in Atlanta for a year after college. I think of those days fondly-- the people are awesome, the products are easy to sell, and you're always learning something new.

Anyway. I compiled this list after a recent trip to a Lush shop I discovered when I accidentally took the brown line train instead of the green line train while attempting to get home... the joys of new city life! I guess it was a win? Here goes...

Face

Fresh face masks are ahhhmazing. I honestly don't try to mess with my skin too much because it can be sensitive and likes to fight dirty when provoked. So. I use these rather sparingly. Although they discontinued my favorite, A Crash Course in Skincare (WHYYY?!?), I've managed to find a couple that suit my needs.

1. Oatifix is your go-to if you're feeling like a reptile with flakes and scales for days. It's moisturizing on account of the banana, and get this, smells like cookies due to the vanilla! For those of us still seeing winter days, go ahead and pick up a pot before you greet spring.

2. The Brazened Honey is a bit harsher, so definitely only try if you're looking for a purifying cleanser that also exfoliates when washed. Almonds are ground down to gently rub those dead skin cells away, while lime oil penetrates to brighten. You'll definitely notice significantly brighter skin after using this one.

Lips

Most people don't even think of their lips when they're reviewing their beauty regiment, but let's just say that those bold color pops that are trending everywhere don't look so sexy on dry, cracked lips. True, lip scrubs are easily made at home (hell, all you really need is some brown sugar), but these little pots are reasonably priced, work excellent, and taste amazing.

3. Mint Julips lip scrub is essentially mint chocolate chip ice cream in sugar form. Delicious! You take a tiny pinch, rub on dry lips, then rub off, or as the website says, lick off. I like to keep mine in the shower to apply right before I get out. It's the perfect prep before applying my daily makeup.

Body

Last but not least, bubble bars. I gathered, by working at Lush, that there are two kinds of people in this world: those who love taking baths and those who can't stand them. If you fall into the latter category, jump to the bottom because I'm not offering much here. I do love baths but am not fanatical about them. I like to sit in a nice hot bath for a good 30 minutes or so and then go about my business. These blocks of deliciousness make that 30 minutes so much more pleasant, and based on the fact that you can break them up into the chunk size that best suits you, it's really not so bad shelling out eight bucks for a bubble bath.

4. The Rose Jam Bubbleroon is a fun little take on the recent French macaron trend you see nearly everywhere these days. Decadent little discs of almonds and sugar, these bath bubbles are just as sweet. The center is nice and creamy, providing extra moisture so you're left feeling extra smooth after soaking, and the rose scent is faint so you can breath it pleasant floral notes, without being overwhelmed.

5. The French Kiss Bubble Bar is hands down my favorite. I had a million of these when I worked at Lush. I even crumbled some, sprinkled them in my car, and then vacuumed them up so I could take the scent with me. The light lavender scent not only leaves me smelling beautiful, but also helps me rest at night. I love using these right before bedtime so I can drift off to sleep with my favorite book and wake feeling refreshed.

Love Lush, too? What are your go-to products for the season?

A Post: Long Time No See

This is a picture of my lovely cat, Stevie; although, it could very well be a picture of me because that's all I seem to be doing these days once I pick up a book.

It all started when I got an email stating that five (four of those featured below) books were available for pick-up at the local library. I had been waiting MONTHS for these and they all came at once. It seemed like a terrible conundrum because I just sat and stared at the pile. I had no idea how to go about choosing the one I'd read first. So, naturally, I let them sit on my coffee table for a few days. I'd casually walk by, pick one up, read a paragraph or two and then set it down. Finally, I decided to dive into the The Investigation because A) it was totally different than anything I'd read this year, B) the author is a male and I've been slacking in that department, and C) I'd been eyeing it longer than any of the others and this was my chance.

The Investigation by Philippe Claudel

I'm still not finished with The Investigation. Don't get me wrong; it's a great read, but I'll be the first to admit that the author's intentions are completely over my head. The overall message and social commentary are quite in your face, but that doesn't mean I completely understand what Claudel is trying to express exactly.

Read any smartypants review of the title on Goodreads and you'll understand what I'm talking about. Well crafted, but not totally engrossing. It's on my nightstand. I get about 5 pages in before I zonk out.

Tell the Wolves I'm Home by Carol Rifka Brunt

This was my second most anticipated library score. I'm over halfway through, even if it has taken me two weeks, but know I'll really love this one when it's all said and done. The author is incredibly talented, the story heart-breaking and engaging. It's been hard keeping up with this one when it hits close to home. Family loss is always so hard and Brunt expresses it perfectly.

Homeward Bound: Why Women Are Embracing the New Domesticity by Emily Matchar

Guilty as charged. I love baking from scratch, learning to knit, and the idea of canning. Yes, I am totally the target audience for this read. Matchar explores the rise of interest in the "good ol' days" and how these fads are changing society. Written like an ethnography, I was sucked in before realizing I was reading five thousand other books. I've got some time because this one comes out in May.

Eight Girls Taking Pictures by Whitney Otto

I don't know much about this title other than it focuses on women who took pictures in the past. I like taking pictures, I'm a woman, and I enjoy reading about the past, so it seemed like a win.

Tigers in Red Weather by Liza Klaussmann

Another of those highly anticipated titles. I had this one on my library list for about six months. Yes, six months! It was that popular. Then the system wonked out and never sent me the e-mail telling me to come pick it up. I lost my spot and had to request it again! Fortunately, the hype had died down a bit and it arrived much earlier. Maybe a bit too early?

For someone who absolutely detests reading more than one book at a time, I'm shocked that this many books are even lying around as a possibility at this point. Don't even get me started on my review list over on Netgalley. I should be banned from requesting more books. No, seriously. Or maybe even the site... you know, until I finish those already awaiting my attention.

What are you reading? Anyone else feeling the spring slump???
