Honeymoon Sneak Peek

My photography business, bethpriddy.com, is booming! I'm so busy I can't keep my head straight so apologies for the lack of posts here.
The honeymoon came and went and it was AMAZING. Sadly, I haven't had a chance to sit down and edit most of the photos I snapped while abroad, but wanted to share a little something for the time being. Here's a shot of Salzburg, Austria-- the prettiest city in the land. I fell in love instantly and can't wait to see more someday!

On the Road: Wildsam Detroit Guide Launch
If a Wildsam field guide is absent from your library, you're doing something wrong. Seriously. Readers beware: you might develop a new obsession. #truth
It's not just the design aesthetic that makes these guides so special; no, it's the content between the binding that blow all other city guide books out of the water. I'm sorry, Lonely Planet, but these are infinitely cooler. In addition to the best places to eat, shop, see, and do, each guide offers a history of the city through clips of almanacs from decades past, and spotlights individuals in the community who evince its culture.
When I heard about the Detroit guide launch at a fancy USA-made watch retailer, I decided why not take a day trip, see the city, get a new copy, and meet the creator. It was pretty incredible.

The most memorable experience outside of meeting Taylor Bruce, the founder of the Wildsam project, was meeting Naomi Long Madgett. The 91-year-old, long-time Detroit resident, and poet laureate, had much to share during our brief conversation.
She loves Detroit (originally from Virginia) and has lived in the same house for 53 years. She explained to me the ways in which refrigerators used to be kept in the homes-- built-in, with motors powering them in the basement. Her brother, and confidante, was one of the distinguished Tuskegee Airmen during WWII and survived a POW camp. I can only imagine the changes she's seen in the city's landscape. If it weren't for her interview in the guide, I would never have heard her story, learned about her powerful work; it was truly an honor.
Wildsam doesn't simply suggest the best things to see and do, but also celebrates the diverse and beautiful individuals who inhabit a city, who make the city, who bring it alive. It's a refreshing look at travel and I'm embracing it completely.
*Wildsam currently only features cities in the United States (Austin, San Francisco, Nashville, and Detroit at present); however, a recent partnership with JCrew produced London neighborhood guides, so keep an eye out. **Not a sponsored post.

I'll admit I didn't know what to expect visiting Detroit. I purposely waited to buy the guide at the event and didn't do too much research because I knew I wanted to drive into Canada (my first visit), to get the best view of Detroit, and wouldn't have too much time. Everyone you talk to, it seems, will warn you of the dangers of the Motor City and display shock when you announce you plan to visit. Yes, issues of bankruptcy and high crime rates cause anyone to cringe, but it's a city on the mend with many hidden gems that are worth exploring. Plus, practicing safe travel always goes a long way.
Honestly, Detroit itself was much like any other large city in the midwest: aging architecture, odd roundabouts, and history for miles. I loved it. Just driving by Comerica Park gave me chills. While I didn't get to see very much, I plan to make a nice weekend trip up sometime, Wildsam guide in hand.
Shinola, a Detroit-based, USA-made leather goods retailer, hosted the event and gave guests an opportunity to mingle, take in the finery of tanned leather watch bands and handsome bicycles, and meet the makers.

The Married Life
Yep, you read that correctly. Justin and I, without sharing the news, headed up to the local courthouse and exchanged our vows on Monday. In many ways, it's kind of hard to believe that we were ever going to do anything more than don some fancy clothes and exchange those sacred words without a witness. We're sort of known for our epic surprises so this had to have topped them all. Fortunately, everyone was thrilled so no hard feelings.
We pledged our hearts to one another and celebrated with champagne, macarons, and slow dancing in the living room. It was perfect and wonderful and every other imaginable word to describe happiness. Without offering much more, here are some pictures I managed to capture before and after we said our I dos. Enjoy!

Ditching the Plan (or How We Cancelled Our Wedding)
We've slashed our plans for a big wedding down south. We cancelled the venue, regrettably informed the photographer, and had to break the news gently to all of our loving family members and friends. We faced disappointment* from everyone involved and lost a good chunk of change on all the down payments. And while it was tough, I am, I REPEAT, I am so incredibly happy that we've said NO to a wedding.
We're still getting married. I'll still be using my dress and my pretty shoes. Hell, I might even change my last name. (Still an ongoing debate in my head.) But we'll be doing it in London, England!
It's been years since I've been out of the country, and much longer since I've visited one of my favorite cities, London, so it felt like the perfect decision. And the mister will be leaving the US of A for Europe for the first time, so it seemed like it would be even more special to see some favorite sites and then do some exploring in cities neither of us have been to. We'll visit London, Paris, and Edinburgh during our week long celebration.
We're in the process of booking the lovely Tori Hancock to document the day with her sharp and dreamy eye, and we'll be holding a symbolic ceremony with just the two of us in a location we've yet to choose. We've thrown ideas out: parks, ancient book stores, a bridge, but just haven't decided. We'll top it off with champagne and cake at a swanky establishment and reflect on all of our blessings.
I really give it to all the ladies and gentlemen who are currently planning their own vow exchange and commend them for their patience and vision. I just couldn't do it. It's so much work and tons of money and sometimes that stress is enough to break you. And because the wedding should be a day to celebrate the commitment of one individual to another, the promise to love and endure all storms till eternity, we recognized that doing what was most comfortable and doable for us would be the most beneficial in the long run. So cheers to London and a life together!
While we've been keeping our own running list of places to go and things to do, I'd love suggestions you might have to make this special trip even more so! Cheers!

A Beginning
I started this blog over 3 years ago with the intention of meeting new people, keeping my brain stimulated, and getting back in touch with the literary world. Thanks to an easy-to-use platform, a social media landscape like Twitter, and, of course, all the lovely bloggers that continued to reach out, I've achieved all of these things to a greater degree than I had ever imagined. It's been wonderful.
The past year brought in so many changes, and while these haven't prevented me from blogging about books, they've certainly captured my wandering mind leaving less time for reading and reviewing. A couple of weeks ago I threw the feeling out, on Twitter, that I was somewhat tired of maintaining a blog that revolved around books and wanted to incorporate all sorts of new topics for discussion. Everyone seemed to more than supportive and thought it was a great idea. Since I've already been adding a little here and there from the beginning, I thought I'd go ahead and take the plunge.
You'll notice that I've redesigned the site (and have lost the lovely literary header). I'm still in the process of brainstorming names and reviewing logos, but soon this will be a whole new space. Travel tips and photos. Recipes and reviews. Beauty and fashion. And the occasional feminist, scholarly discussion. All of this and more will be living and breathing here.
Of course, I'm still going to talk books. Reading is an important part of my life, and readers are always worth knowing, so let's connect.
I'm not going to call this new space a lifestyle blog, even though that's probably what anyone else would say, but think of it as a place to share ideas and then hear what you have to say!
Hopefully you'll stick with me through this change and watch me grow in a whole new direction. If not, I'll be so sad to see you go and do appreciate all the support through the Bookworm Meets Bookworm years.
So... here's to a new year, a new me!

2013 in Photographs
I haven't blogged since October. The tenth of October to be exact. I actually DID blog about books in that post which is saying something because most of my posts before were either a rambling mess or an explosion of exciting announcements.
I haven't been reading, it's true. Well... I have and have not. I only managed to read 32 books this year! However, I have been reading (slowly) and really loved a few novels that I just never managed to write about. I think everyone understands this predicament.
There's a time when you run out of words to say about a novel you've read. Or a moment when you just can't muster the energy after a long day to sit and summarize a plot and then create something that resembles an opinion. It was both of these things. I just couldn't write another post. I couldn't.
I miss the blogging community and still like to read posts (but maybe never comment). I like to follow along on Twitter, and note all the books you're currently reading, or eyeing, so that I'm always in the loop.
2013 was a whirlwind. So much changed. And even though this blog suffered, I know I can always come back and say hello.
Here's a year in photos to celebrate the changes!
1. I launched my own photography business: bethpriddy.com
2. J's sister graduated high school and went off to college. I got to document it.
3. My brother and sister-in-law tied the knot. They are the best.
4. J and I agreed to share a life together. We're obviously crazy.
5. One of my best friends welcomed her first child!
6. I moved to Chicago. J, of course, did too.
7. My entire family stayed at the beach for a week. It was AMAZING.
8. My brother and sister-in-law also welcomed their first child, Canaan. He is ridiculously cute.
9. I was hired to shoot Renegade Craft Fair Chicago!
10. I toured the midwest to see what the fall was like. (This was in Michigan.)
I'm sure I'm forgetting something BUT this is what I've got to show for now. Another of my brothers recently announced that he and his wife would be welcoming twins in April (those maternity shots, unfortunately, are not ready to be viewed). But it's happening and I'm so excited for our growing family.
2013 was good to me and I can't wait to see what the new year has in store! Happy New Year, everyone!!!
