My First Readathon!

It feels like it's been a million years since I've had any time to sit down and read. What better way to commit to giving myself a little downtime than signing up for a readathon?! I've always wanted to join in but the timing has never worked out, and while I do actually have to photograph an event for several hours on Saturday, I still have most of the weekend to kick back and get lost in a good one. Ahhhhhh! It's my first readathon and I'M SO EXCITED!!!! I've really missed reading and blogging and all you blogging buddies and just want to jump in on the action.

I went to the library this evening in anticipation and picked up a few titles I'd been eyeing on Goodreads. I'm sure there will be some changes (and technically Dangerous Liaisons doesn't count because I've already started it), but I'm pretty happy with what I've got so far.

Readathon TBR:

Icelander by Dustin Long

I know nothing about this one. I found it while looking for another book and thought it would be appropriate since I'll be visiting Iceland in September. *Shrugs shoulders*

Broken Glass Park by Alina Bronsky

I found this one in a used bookstore in Chicago but couldn't commit to buying it at the time. I'll admit I'm not familiar with her work, but do know she has an extensive library, so fingers crossed.

The Observations by Jane Harris

I tried this one a couple of years ago and couldn't finish. But then Harris went and wrote one of my all-time favorites, Gillespie and Iso I figured I'd give it another go.

What We've Lost is Nothing by Rachel Louise Snyder

This title is my library's summer reading choice (One Book, One Oak Park). You  know, the whole community chooses a book for the season and then a huge event is held for people to participate and discuss. It's pretty awesome. It also happens to be based in my current home base, Oak Park, IL, so it'll be doubly interesting.

Second Life by S.J. Watson

I enjoyed Before I Go to Sleep (I really liked the movie), so it was added to the list because thrillers are always fast reads. Online sex circles? Ha. Doesn't sound like my cup of tea but I'm giving it a go. The book, not the circles...

The Caretaker by A.X. Ahmad

The second novel in this series made a recent must-read thriller list on NPR, and who am I to argue with that?! So I picked up the first. We'll see.

So... friends, what are you planning on reading?!? Anyone have any must-read historical fiction recommendations that I should add ASAP?!

The Weekend Awaits - Ever So Patiently

Happy Friday!  The two day break from the 8 to 5 has been the source of much anticipation.  Atlanta's dogwoods and cherry blossom trees are in full bloom. (I'll be including some photos to prove it.)The landscape is filled with blue skies and bright sunshine.  It's also going to be close to 80 degrees.  That's Atlanta - and I love it.

I finished The Book Thief last night.  Tears and all.  I'm actually quite congested today because of the intense tear action, and had every intention to post my review this afternoon.  But, honestly, it's just going to have to wait until Monday.  The book and the craze of the past couple weeks have left me on empty.  J left this morning to go stay in the beautiful N. Georgia mountains for the weekend (lucky). I keep wondering if it's terrible that I'm so excited to have the whole place to myself for TWO whole days.  Note: He'll be missed.  A little.  ;)

I'm loving that I've taken the opportunity to create a book blog, and that I'm actively engaged with individuals who share goals and ideals.  It's made my life so bright.  Sometimes you just need a break, though.  This weekend is definitely going to be used to reignite my zeal, tie up some loose ends and do whatever I'm feeling like doing at an exact moment.

So, sorry for the rant.  Here are some things that have brought cheer to my life in the past week.  Another note: photography is another passion, so you'll definitely be seeing more and more test images as I work my way up as an amateur photographer.  Enjoy!

1. Burst of bright color.

2. Window project: felt, twine, yarn, ribbon, buttons and burlap.

3. Flowers.  Everywhere.

Hope you enjoy this lovely weekend, too!

Sunday Edition: A Day Trip

With the madness of the Read-Along, the book club meetings and various commitments I didn't get to post my adventure last Sunday.  With the weather in the high 60s, J came home from a Sunday meeting with plans to cart me to Chattanooga for the day.  WE LOVE CHATTANOOGA.  I mean, what's not to love about the Northshore?!

Here are some photos of our excursion:

Food at our favorite hot dog hang out.  J bought me a copy of Barbara Kingsolver's Prodigal Summer at one of my favorite used book stores.  And we sat in the park and watched people enjoying the beautiful weather.  I also attempted to jump a stone divider, which resulted in one of the funniest slideshow of photos of me (courtesy of my lovely boyfriend) to date.  Apparently, you shouldn't listen to someone who's 6'3"tell you it's really easy when you barely grew to be 5'5".  It was so worth it, though.

What did you do this weekend?

Lovely Little Endeavors

The weekend offers me the chance to do all the things I dream about during the work week.  I like to visit my family.  Decorate my home.  Whip up new dishes.  And, occasionally, leave the homestead to sip warmth in pretty little tea cups.

When my nose isn't stuck in a book, I do things. Camera at my side.

Here's a look at last weekend in anticipation of the coming break from the 8 to 5:

I. Tea Party

II. Trips to the Market and a Teeny, Tiny Kitchen

III. Nana and Papa and the Vast Space They Inhabit

Ah, fresh air. And flowers. And herbs for baking. And tea for drinking.

"I was something that lay under the sun and felt it, like the pumpkins, and I did not want to be anything more.  I was entirely happy.  Perhaps we feel like that when we die and become a part of something entire, whether it is sun and air, or goodness and knowledge. At any rate, that is happiness; to be dissolved into something complete and great." - My Antonia

Not-So-Lazy Sunday Edition

Another weekend gone... too quickly, I say!  Alas, it may be coming to an end, but the weekend was full of excitement (J's last rock show, my little brother's rehearsal dinner, etc.), and well worth all the running around.  Therefore, this is my apology for not getting as many reviews as I'd like out in a more timely manner.  So many books, so little time!

Today J and I took the opportunity to get some fresh air, lap up the sunshine and clear our heads in preparation for the daily grind.  We visited a well-known park in the area, and discovered the most refreshing bird sanctuary.  Weed invested fields never looked so good.  The exemplary weather only added to the bliss of the occasion.

I thought I'd post some photos of the not-so-lazy Sunday afternoon we were able to enjoy.  Hopefully they provide a little inspiration for those of you that haven't had the time to take a nice, long soothing stroll.  Perhaps this may encourage you to step back from the chaos of everyday life and behold the immense beauty of the world that surrounds you.

Here's to a wonderful week ahead... with some great reviews to accompany that beautiful Fall sky!

Any ways you deal with stress/ deadlines/ overwhelming glaring stacks of really big books that need to be read?

Thesaurus Thursday

Can you believe it's Thursday already?  I guess that's what happens when you have a holiday (-ish).  I was able to leave the office at noon this past Labor Day Monday, so that's a little bit more time for reading and relaxing. I hope everyone enjoyed the holiday, regardless of whether or not you had to labor on the holiday that exists to honor that labor.  You get it.  Anyway, moving forward.  I am really excited about this upcoming weekend.  My lovely boyfriend, J, is taking me on a little adventure to North Carolina. Winton-Salem, to be exact.  I don't know much more than that... he just happens to be an excellent secret keeper.  So here's to a surprise-filled weekend!

I recently picked up Lionel Shriver's We Need To Talk About Kevin: A Novel (which I'll be posting about upon completion).  To choose one word, or even a few, from such a verbose novel has proven difficult.  I've decided that I can't read it unless I have the dictionary propped open next to me; otherwise, I'd miss many important details.  So, expect many words from this endeavor to appear, here, on the Bookworm Meets Bookworm site.

Today's word: insouciance.

Insouciance- Noun, first used in 1799.  1. lighthearted unconcern: NONCHALANCE

What I would say: His insouciance during the evacuation was due to the amount of drinks he had consumed before it occurred.

Any exciting plans for the weekend?  Any books you're really excited to get your hands on soon?  I'd love to hear!
