Thesaurus Thursday

Thursday- Thursday- Thursday!  Looking forward to an entire weekend of relaxation and book reading.  Lots of book reading.  I might even attempt to tidy up the apartment while J is out of town. Who am I kidding?!? I'll probably just read.  What word seems fitting for the one day that I get to leave early from work each week? How about roisterous? 

Roisterous- Adjective, 1582. 1. to engage in noisy revelry : CAROUSE.

What I would say: The roisterous laughter of the girls reverberated throughout the cabin. 

P.S. Tonight I'm baking a scrumptous pumpkin butterscotch pie to bring in the new season.  Yummmmy!

Thesaurus Thursday

I was really looking forward to the content I was going to be able to provide today after attending last night's lecture at the Atlanta History Center featuring Jonathan Safran Foer.  Sadly, an appointment I had ended up exceeding the allocated time and I didn't get out until after the lecture had already started.  I'm not really upset that I paid for the ticket and didn't go; I'm upset because I had been anticipating the event for weeks, looking at my calendar, counting down the days. My new mission is to find someone that did attend the lecture and persuade them to provide a guest post...wish me luck!  This weekend has so much in-store for me that it's hard to be too down about missing Foer speak.  Check out the events going on this weekend at the AJC-Decatur Book Festival if you haven't already. 


So it's finally Thursday.  I love Thursdays because I love the fun-filled weekends that constitute my routine and because Thursday is really close to Friday, and Friday's kind of like a weekend day... well, you get it!  So here we go: I've pulled many words from my ARC of All is Forgotten, Nothing is Lost by Lan Samantha Chang which I'm currently reading.  I'll be providing a review of this eloquently crafted novel the day of it's release, September 27th. 
Today's word: Redolent.


Redolent: Adjective, 15th century. 1. exuding fragrance : AROMATIC. 2. A: full of a specified fragrance : SCENTED. B: EVOCATIVE, SUGGESTIVE.


What I might say: Thanksgiving nostalgia prompts a longing for the redolent aroma of pumpkin pie and roasted sweet potatoes. 


Fall is around the corner: my favorite time of year. What sensations/memories does Fall evoke for you?

Thesaurus Thursday

Here's to another Thesaurus Thursday!  I'm sitting here looking through my notebook with all of the words I've noted while finishing up Anthony Doerr's Memory Wall: Stories, and I'm trying to choose a word that would be fitting for a day filled with rain and grey skies. 


So how about infinitesimal? I think I can work with it. 


Infinitesimal- Adjective; Originated around 1710. Meaning: 1. Taking on values arbitrarily close but greater than zero. Or, 2. immeasurably or incalculably small. 
What I might say: Despite the paper's promise of an infinitesimal chance of rain, the sky tells me we'll probably be staying in tonight.


Any other uses?  I'd really enjoy some suggestions.

Thesaurus Thursday

 

Another week, another Thesaurus Thursday!  And I'm excited to share that I've got quite the list going with all the new books I've started... so, hopefully you'll be back for more!  Like ineffable, I really like the sound of truculent; and I just happened to see this beautiful string of letters forming this overwhemingly rich word in Major Pettigrew's Last Stand, which I finished on Monday evening.  I immediately added it to my Thursday list so I could share all of it's possibly meanings.

Truculent, and it's uses- Adjective. Circa 1540 (it's old). 1. feeling or displaying ferocity: CRUEL, SAVAGE. 2. deadly, destructive. 3. scathingly harsh; VITRIOLIC., and 4. aggressively self-assertive: BELLIGERENT. 

I would say: Such truculent actions only improve one's credibility in the eyes of the heartless. 

Hmm... That's a little depressive. Give me some suggestions! Nothing wrong with sharpening the ol' vocabulary a bit, right?

Thesaurus Thursday

I love to learn new words. I see them in the books I'm reading, in the tweets I'm receiving and the work I'm reviewing.  And even if I've seen a word and understand it's meaning, I don't always know synonyms and the like.  I'd like to officially dedicate Thursdays to the pursuit of enriching my vocabulary.  Learn! Grow! Speak!
Today's word, ineffable, is a favorite of mine. It seems to roll off the tongue. Ineffable, an adjective, which can mean: 1. incapable of being expressed in words, syns. indescribable, unspeakable; or, 2. not to be uttered, syn: taboo.
What I would say: Often times, it's an ineffable procress, trying to explain a novel's significance to me; my audience would never understand.
