The Married Life

Yep, you read that correctly. Justin and I, without sharing the news, headed up to the local courthouse and exchanged our vows on Monday. In many ways, it's kind of hard to believe that we were ever going to do anything more than don some fancy clothes and exchange those sacred words without a witness. We're sort of known for our epic surprises so this had to have topped them all. Fortunately, everyone was thrilled so no hard feelings.

We pledged our hearts to one another and celebrated with champagne, macarons, and slow dancing in the living room. It was perfect and wonderful and every other imaginable word to describe happiness. Without offering much more, here are some pictures I managed to capture before and after we said our I dos. Enjoy!

Thanks for all the love, friends!

A Post: Recipes for Bookworms?

Hi there, bookworms!

I can't tell you how much I enjoy blogging. I love setting goals, working towards them, and meeting great people along the way. However, as much as I love it, I want to make sure you love reading it!

As you know, I occasionally feature my baking creations and really love the process and the feedback. With that being said, I'm thinking about incorporating reviews of cookbooks and the like into the blogging schedule, but wanted to put some feelers out first. Is this something you'd want to see here? If so, let me know in the comments below. Specific requests? Go ahead and throw those up there as well!

Feel free to leave any other suggestions of things you'd like to see in this space!

A Post: Deliver the Christmas Cheer

I can't believe it's already mid-December! It seems like Thanksgiving just ended and I was just starting to decorate the apartment, begin the wrapping and light the pine scented candles. It actually felt too early. Like I was betraying Thanksgiving in some way. However, I guess I'm glad I got a start on it all because it's less than a week away! I got the shopping done early, and actually only had to call about two gifts that were missing, and fight over one parking space to replace one of those aforementioned gifts. So. I'm officially done with the gift getting and have a few packages to wrap up before I can sit back and relax.

Our apartment's generally clear surfaces are currently covered by boxes wrapped in festive paper and bags full of surprises. I love to choose little things for my loved ones that I know will bring the biggest smile. I keep mental notes of all the things they've mentioned throughout the year so they get the perfect little something. However, purchased items aren't always the meaning of success, so I decided to throw in some homemade gifts to lighten the load and spread the love. Sorry for all the Instagram/camera filtered photos... I was too lazy to get out the dslr.

Here's a couple I'd like to share that are simple enough to finish just in time for the big day.

S'mores Kits

I initially found this gem on Pinterest during Halloween. When I saw Christmas tree shaped Peeps at the grocery story, I figured I'd give it a go. S'mores just happen to be one of my most favorite desserts, and these festive little trees make it the cutest treat.

What you'll need: (Note: I'm a craft hoarder, ask J.. he'll confirm, so I had all of this stuff around the house. I'm saying this so you don't feel like a weirdo if you don't.)

1 box Christmas tree shaped Peeps (they also have gingerbread men and snowmen)
1 bag Hershey's mini bars
1 box of graham crackers (if you're feeling up to it you can make your own, I like this recipe.)
Sandwich bags
Treat bags
Ribbon, Yarn or Twine

I use sandwich bags to keep the contents fresh so that the recipient can choose to eat them right away or save for later. If you have a vacuum sealer, you're way cooler than me, and should definitely use that. Place two graham crackers, two Peeps and two hershey bars next to one another (you can also play around with the placement) in the sandwich bag and seal. Place within a festive treat bag, or sheet of tissue paper, or piece of burlap, and make a neat bow with the decorative ribbon, yarn or twine. I also bought mini snowflakes, used a hole punch, and threaded the ribbon through to make gift tags, but you can do whatever you want to add a little extra flair. Finish by smiling innocently while handing over to children already full of SUGAR.

I gave these to all the kids in my extended family and they loved them. Their parents can pop them in the microwave for a quick dessert, or they can snack on the items individually. It might not be the most HEALTHY holiday treat on your list, but it's definitely tasty! It's also really quick and easy. So... you're welcome & enjoy!

Chocolate Chunk Blondies (recipe featured and adapted from Shutterbean.com)

If you haven't tried a recipe from Tracy's blog, you need to do something about that ASAP because they are the best. Like Joy the Baker (they actually have a podcast together), she features delicious goodies that are sometimes healthy, and a lot of times not, with good ingredients and awesome photo steps to match. To say I'm in love with her blog is an understatement. When I saw her recipe for these blondies, I knew I had to make them for my Dad's family Christmas party. Total success. Seriously, I didn't even get to bring any left overs home, which is rare considering the amount of desserts often present.

(I briefly considered using butterscotch with chocolate chips, which you can totally do, but decided against it. Next time, I say!)

What you'll need:

  • 1/2 pound (2 sticks) unsalted butter, at room temperature
  • 1 cup light brown sugar, lightly packed I used half dark and half light, but it's whatever
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
  • 2 extra-large eggs, at room temperature
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1 1/2 cups chopped walnuts I'm weird about nuts in my desserts so I didn't add these
  • 12 oz. semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • Small bag of decorative M&Ms of your choice I chose the green and red colored, dark chocolate.

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Grease and flour an 8 x 12 x 2 inch baking pan.
In the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, cream the butter, brown sugar, and granulated sugar on high speed for 3 minutes, until light and fluffy. With the mixer on low, add the vanilla, then the eggs, one at a time, and mix well, scraping down the bowl. In a small bowl, sift together the flour, baking soda and salt and with the mixer still on low, slowly add flour mixture to the butter mixture. Fold in chocolate chips with a rubber spatula.
Spread the batter into the prepared pan and smooth the top. I chose to add festive M&Ms to the top of the blondies to make a little design. Lightly press them into the very top of the dough in whatever design you choose or sprinkle them over (again lightly pressing in). Bake for 30 minutes (or what seems like forever in my ridiculous oven).

The finished product:

Hope everyone is having a happy holiday! Remember to reach out to all those that love and let them know how much you care. :)

Design*Sponge Book Signing - Atlanta

So this is where you see me gush... no, really, GUSH.  Last night I attended Grace Bonney's Design*Sponge event at West Elm in Atlanta.  Not only did I go to my first book signing party, I also participated in a craft class that preluded the party.

Ok, so my skills will never match some of those crafty ladies, and surely never the design queen herself, but I had so much fun chugging along with other happy crafters.

If you follow Design*Sponge as closely as I do, I was patiently awaiting an Atlanta event announcement for quite some time.  Limited seating- hands on session instructed by Grace Bonney- signed copy of the new book- party to preclude with a photobooth and yummy goodness!?  SIGN ME UP! I managed to snag a spot along with 24 other lucky individuals to participate in the craft session pre-book fest.

Here are some photos of the event:

Shiny new copy of Design*Sponge at Home by Grace Bonney.

The craft tables. Project: Freezer Paper Monogrammed Handkerchiefs.  Lesson learned: Cutting small objects with an exact-o knife is not necessarily a strong point for me.

Does this make me a creep-o?!  No shame, people!  It was my first signing!

Even the banners are full of fun.  My iPhone picture taking performance... not so much.

This is the one I'm most sorry about.  They had mini grown-up, handmade poptarts from a local bakery with fresh fruit.  Delicious does not even touch this stuff.

The sweet photobooth back drop.  I went alone so didn't feel the need to get my mug snapped.  Ok, this note was not included to induce sympathy.  No tears, people!  I had a blast!

All and all, it was fabulous.  And despite her strenuous tour, Grace managed to keep the energy up and help all of us out that just didn't seem to get it.  Did I mention that she's also like the cutest little lady ever?! I'm happy to see her succeed and can't wait to dive into my book for some inspiration.

If you have a chance, take a peek... and then buy the thing, duh.

Book Break: Homemade Stress Reducers and Feel Good Treatments

Hi guys!  I've been occupied with all the books for my reading groups and loving it! I'm really anticipating finishing up and sharing with this appreciable community of fellow bibliophiles!  As many of you know, I'm a sucker for handmade, old-fashioned goodies.  I love DIY projects, and can't resist a money saving opportunity.  With that being said, I realized that with the changing of the season, and the stress that I've been managing in my life, my skin was looking pretty patchy, and, downright, nasty.  That's saying A LOT.  So, I considered taking a trip to purchase some kind of exfoliate that would brighten my skin and leave me feeling squeaky clean.  However, when I thought about spending the money, I knew I could concoct something in my own kitchen, eliminating the stress of going through all the steps to make said purchase.

One.

Lemon.
I usually keep lemons around the house for cooking and cleaning.
Citric Acid- Amazing!  Cleanses. Brightens. Tightens.

Two.

Baking soda.
I always have lots of baking soda on hand for baking and cleaning.
Cleanses. Exfoliates. Great for sensitive skin.

Three.

Take approximately 2 tablespoons of baking soda and mix with tablespoon and a half of fresh lemon juice.  The two should form a thin paste.  Gently rub on face or body (I usually rinse my face with water first) to exfoliate and cleanse the skin.  Wash off with warm water and pat dry with towel.

Skin: Bright and fresh!

For many, this lovely DIY treatment is a thing of the past, but for me it was a revelation in what I could do without having to spend lots of money on mass produced face scrubs. NOTE: Oats, honey and yogurt also work wonders and soften the face.  Add some mashed bananas, and you've got one yummy mask!

Other goodies to spread some feel-good vibes: essential oils.

These are recent acquisitions to my home skin and body treatments.

Tea tree oil is a great cleansing agent and saves my skin when Atlanta gets hot and muggy.  I mix a drop of this with 2 ounces of water and use it as a toner.  It can be a little drying, so make sure to be careful if you're trying it out for the first time.

Lavender oil.  What does this miracle oil not do?  Seriously.  I love lavender.  I like to add a drop or two of this to a small bowl of water, or a hot wash cloth, on the night's when I'm having a hard time getting to sleep. It can also be mixed with water in a spray bottle to create a lovely bedtime bed cloth spray.  Lavender oil is my absolute pick in the fragrance department.  Dab a little of this on your wrists and jawline to experience a huge sense of calm... not to mention the attention you're sure to gain from your partner!

Also, yoga.  I just started attending yoga classes in a quaint little studio with some friends.  I'm kicking myself for not getting involved sooner.  So far, I am really loving it.  It's such a great workout and an incredible mood-enhancer that I'm thinking all companies should offer the classes along with benefits!  If you've ever considered taking a class-- DO IT-- what's stopping you?

Have any other great DIY treatments that you'd like to share?  What relaxes you?

DIY: Holiday Gift Tag Craft Project

A couple of days ago, while rummaging through the kitchen storage drawer, I noticed that we had quite a number of brown paper bags from shopping excursions hidden behind the foil. Let me mention that I've recently developed distrust for the craft paper sold at major craft stores, but I've always loved that brown bag design feel. So I thought why not actually, I don't know, use a brown paper bag to create little tags for the gifts under my tree.

So, this is where you'll need to begin:

Step One.

Search high and low for a brown paper bag--you must have one somewhere!  Mine, pictured here, has already gone through one round of tag making.

Step Two.

Cut blocks of paper out.  This can be done with whatever shape you is appropriate for your gift.

Step Three.

Apply adhesive to the bottom of the strips and set. I use adhesive rolls, but double-sided tape or a glue stick would work. This reinforces the paper and makes it a little heavier so that you may decorate your pieces without fear of the paper deteriorating.

Step Four.

After the two sides have been glued together, cut small pieces of scrap paper to fit the brown paper back piece. I use scrap craft paper (the same paper so detested!), measuring and cutting accordingly.

Step Five.

Apply the scrap layer to the brown paper base so that you have a nice, little border.  Use a hole punch to allow you to thread ribbon or attach twine to the tag.

Step Six.

Use a marker or rubber stamp to personalize the tag.

Step Seven.

Thread ribbon through hole and attach to the gift.  Twine is also perfect for a more rustic, organic feel.

Done!

Here's to a simple tag fix that's much more personalized than anything you could buy at the store!

Feel free to share your unique wrapping/tagging ideas!
